World Asthma Day: Why Everyone Should Learn Asthma First Aid

Asthma affects over 2.7 million Australians, making it one of the country’s most common chronic health conditions. Despite its prevalence, many people don’t know how to respond during an asthma emergency. This World Asthma Day, Remedy First Aid Training is encouraging everyone to learn asthma first aid—because a few simple steps can save a life.

What is Asthma First Aid?

Asthma first aid refers to a set of steps used to assist someone experiencing an asthma attack. The method is quick to learn, easy to remember, and vital in ensuring the person receives appropriate care while waiting for medical help. The technique is often referred to as the 4 x 4 x 4 method:

  1. Give 1 puff of a reliever inhaler (such as Ventolin) through a spacer
  2. Take 4 breaths after each puff
  3. Wait 4 minutes
  4. If there is no improvement, repeat the steps and call 000

Using a spacer is highly recommended, as it helps deliver the medication more effectively into the lungs.

Signs and Symptoms of an Asthma Attack

  • Recognising the signs early can make a huge difference. Common symptoms of an asthma attack include:
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing
  • Persistent coughing
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Trouble speaking in full sentences
  • Pale, sweaty, or visibly distressed appearance

Why Asthma First Aid Matters

Asthma attacks can happen suddenly and escalate quickly. Each year, around 400 Australians die from asthma, and many of these deaths are preventable. Whether you’re at home, at work, or out in the community, knowing how to respond with confidence can mean the difference between a minor episode and a medical emergency.

Learning asthma first aid is particularly important for:

  • Parents and carers
  • Teachers and school staff
  • Coaches and sports volunteers
  • Workplace first aiders
